Microsoft Corporation is reportedly making notable advances in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) within healthcare, driven by the recruitment of former staff from Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind. This initiative is being led by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind in 2010 and now head of AI at Microsoft, as detailed in a report by the Financial Times.
To bolster its efforts, Microsoft has appointed Dominic King, the former head of DeepMind’s health unit, as vice-president of its new AI health team based in London. The team also includes Christopher Kelly, a clinical research scientist from DeepMind, along with two other colleagues from the AI start-up. The establishment of this new consumer AI health division is aimed at leveraging generative AI technologies to enhance health-related applications, a response to the increasing demand for accessible health information among consumers.
Microsoft confirmed the launch of this new division in a statement, highlighting the growing relevance of health as a critical use case for responsible AI deployment. Additionally, 46% viewed this technology as a potential means for lowering healthcare costs, while nearly half (48%) reported using generative AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude, for health-related inquiries.
Microsoft’s ongoing efforts in AI development have been further corroborated by significant announcements made during its Ignite conference held last month, where the company unveiled over 80 product enhancements. Analyst Mark Murphy from JPMorgan noted that Microsoft is uniquely positioned to lead in the market, integrating generative AI across both application and infrastructure layers.
With the AI business on track to exceed a $10 billion annual revenue run rate, this segment is set to become the fastest-growing in Microsoft’s history.
