Bharti Airtel’s data centre division, Nxtra, becomes the first in India to implement AI-driven solutions for improved efficiency and reduced power consumption with the SmartSense platform.
Bharti Airtel’s data centre division, Nxtra, has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations to enhance efficiency and reduce power consumption. This initiative reportedly makes Nxtra the first data centre operator in India to utilise AI for these purposes.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, Nxtra revealed that it has implemented the SmartSense platform, developed by sustainability technology company Ecolibrium, in its Chennai data centre. The SmartSense platform is designed to help data centres realise cost savings and improve operational efficiency through predictive maintenance, streamlined automation, and optimized capital expenditure.
Described by Ecolibrium, SmartSense is an AI-driven solution that processes existing data from operations management systems to deliver actionable insights. These insights are displayed on a unified dashboard, aiming to facilitate more sustainable operations by cutting down energy and maintenance costs while simultaneously boosting equipment uptime.
Nxtra anticipates several benefits from employing the SmartSense platform. The company believes it will extend the asset lifecycle by 10% through real-time performance analytics, which assist in detecting early signs of equipment wear and offering corrective recommendations. Additionally, the platform is expected to reduce non-IT power consumption by 10% through the early identification of inefficiencies and energy losses within equipment. Equipment performance is projected to improve by 15%, alongside a 25% enhancement in productivity.
Following successful implementation at the Chennai site, Nxtra plans to roll out the SmartSense platform across all its core data centres. Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra, expressed confidence in the partnership with Ecolibrium, stating that it “will advance our energy efficiency and overall performance.”
This strategic movement by Nxtra aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability in the tech industry, as data centres globally are significant consumers of energy. The deployment of advanced AI platforms like SmartSense could represent a pivotal shift towards more resource-efficient operations, contributing positively to broader environmental goals.
