Meta introduces an AI system to predict user ages on Instagram, targeting underage users to enhance safety features and address concerns over adolescent mental health.
Meta Implements AI Technology to Identify Underage Users on Instagram
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is introducing an AI-based system designed to accurately predict the ages of its users, targeting those under 18. This step is part of the company’s efforts to ensure that teenagers are directed towards ‘teen accounts’ that offer enhanced safety features specifically tailored to this age group.
The initiative follows the implementation of teen accounts on Instagram, launched in September, which aim to protect users aged between 13 and 17 by offering a controlled environment. These accounts automatically set stricter privacy settings, limiting communication from unknown users and filtering potentially harmful content. However, the effectiveness of these measures depends heavily on the honest disclosure of age by the users themselves.
In response to the challenge of users misreporting their ages, Meta has developed an AI tool known as the ‘adult classifier’. Expected to be rolled out next year, this software is designed to analyse various user data points—such as profile interactions, content consumption, and social connections—to estimate a user’s age. A seemingly innocuous detail, like the nature of birthday messages, might be employed by the AI to ascertain a user’s true age bracket.
Meta’s decision to integrate this technology emerges against a backdrop of scrutiny and critique regarding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. Back in 2021, a report by the Wall Street Journal brought to light internal findings that have long been available to Meta, which highlighted the adverse effects of Instagram on teenage users, particularly concerning mental health. The report cited insights, including from 2019, indicating Instagram exacerbated body image concerns for a significant portion of teenage girls.
As it stands, there remains a considerable number of teenage users operating regular adult accounts due to the voluntary nature of age classification on the platform. By initiating automatic transitions to teen accounts for users whose reported ages align with their policies, and deploying AI for those who may misrepresent their age, Meta hopes to mitigate some of these challenges.
Allison Hartnet, Meta’s director of product management for youth and social impact, underscores the importance of enforcing appropriate account settings to safeguard young users. Although the complete impact of this AI intervention remains to be seen, it marks another chapter in Meta’s ongoing adjustments aimed at better accommodating the digital safety and well-being of its youngest users.
